Danbury Family Dies in Pennsylvania Turnpike Crash

A Danbury family of three was killed when their car skidded on a wet turnpike near Morgantown and struck a trailer truck. Charles D. Markoff 27, his wife Faye Sherman Markoff 25, and their 18 month old son Stephen Richard died. The truck driver Robert Foster 21 from Michigan sustained facial lacerations. The Markoffs had been traveling to Lancaster to visit relatives. Services planned for Tuesday at the United Jewish Center in Danbury.

Fare Boost Applies To CR&L Bus Service

The Connecticut Railway Lighting company began a fare increase yesterday at 6 38 am as CR&L buses started from Bridgeport garages for Easter Sunday service. The token rate rose to 70 cents per token with each fare at 17 12 cents, up from 15 cents 9. Affected school tickets rose from seven to ten cents. CR&L serves Norwalk Ausonia and New Britain.

Elsie Bambridge, daughter of Rudyard Kipling, refused permission for Capitol Records to release a Frank Sinatra recording of On the Road to Mandalay due to altered words. She said her father would not have approved and noted Sinatra sought to use his world fame to push the release. Bambridge is Kipling's estate trustee and widow of a British officer.

A 13 year old local news seller and carrier, Philip Prokop, spotted an accident on North Main Street near Brookside and biked to the scene with his Voigtlander camera. He photographed the crash in which three people were injured, then hurried to Mass at St. Teresa's church, later processing the pictures at home.

Easter Offering Looted From South Methodist Church Safe

The South Methodist Church on Main Street reported a break in this afternoon. A safe in the church office, where the Easter offering was stored, was forced open and money inside identified as 148 dollars and witnesses say a portion was removed. Miss Stephanie Casca, 16, discovered the open door at 4:30 p.m. The Rev. Fred Edgar notified police.

Stratford Boy Killed in Fall

Ten year-old Robert Joseph Jacko of Stratford Conn died in Monrovia hospital from injuries after falling from a tree in Monrovia canyon during a visit to relatives. Funeral services are set for Wednesday morning at Lu chantsky funeral home and Holy Name of Jesus church with Mass of requiem. Burial will be in St Michael's cemetery. He is survived by his parents a sister and grandparents.

Eleven die in Canada train auto crash near Sherbrooke

Eleven people, including nine children, were killed when an automobile collided with a Canadian Pacific train at a rural grade crossing about 20 miles west of Sherbrooke Quebec. Poor visibility from high winds and wet snow contributed to the crash.

Five Children Die as Train Hits Group on Viaduct

An Easter outing near McDonna, Texas ended in tragedy when a Sunset Limited passenger train struck a crowd of about 300 Latin American youths trapped on a mile long viaduct by the Medina river. Five children were killed and a sixth escaped to safety.
