In Independence Missouri Mrs Truman denounced a report that former President Harry S Truman was ill and hospitalized as ridiculous. Police traced false claims to a motorcade incident but Mrs Truman said he is not in bed or hospitalized and the family had no illness to report.
An underground explosion at the Balmer North coal mine near Natal BC killed at least 14 miners. Officials of Crows Nest Industries Ltd said 14 bodies were recovered and nine others injured. Rescue operations continued for two missing men as of Monday.
Connecticut faces rising air pollution with Ansonia recording the dirtiest air among 20 monitoring stations. Bridgeport and New Haven follow, as officials call for a public health program to manage air resources to avoid overburdening the atmosphere.
Assistant Fire Chief Edward F. Bannon announced a federal grant of 22 208 to support the City Bureau of Air Pollution. Putnamville Indiana AP former Terre Haute police chief says a 6.5 mm Mannlicher Carcano rifle used in the Kennedy assassination was found in a hotel room three days after the event. The salesman from San Antonio registered Nov 25 1963 and checked out Nov 26 buying a bus ticket to St Louis.
Despite brisk breezes the Bridgeport thermometer hit a record high for April at 75 degrees yesterday, surpassing the old 61 degree mark.
High winds sparked grass and marshland fires along railroad tracks from Devon to the West Haven line. More than 300 acres burned near Andersons Lawns as smoke shut Milford roads and a Woodmont blaze drew West Haven aid. Fire officials reported 200 acres burned in Devon area and eight of Milford’s 13 engines were deployed, with assistance from West Haven’s fire company at Nike site and Old Settlers campgrounds.
Viet Cong guerrillas fired 70 to 100 mortar rounds early today at the U S 7th Armored Cavalry base camp 40 miles east of Saigon, killing one American and wounding nine. U S bomber and fighter aircraft hit targets in both South and North Vietnam as ground forces pursue operations to secure roads and supply routes along the coast.
New York AP reports photographer Lee Lockwood in Life magazine describes a definite split between the Hanoi government and the Viet Cong after his North Vietnam admission. The Viet Cong advocate a non Communist overall government for reunification, stating that South Vietnam cannot accept communism.
