Moscow AP report quotes Defense Minister Andrei Grechko saying the Soviet arsenal includes a weapon of huge destructive power capable of hitting any point on the globe. He also called for further demonstrations of strength and strategic resolve amid Cold War tensions.
President Nixon Governor Reagan and HEW Secretary Richardson met to resolve California welfare compliance. Reagan’s plan can be implemented without violating federal law, with about 700 million in federal payments at stake. Interim fixes will be discussed in Sacramento next week. California faces a June 30 deadline for compliance.
AP reports North Vietnamese artillery pounded Duc Duc early Saturday causing light casualties per Saigon. The town, scene of Monday’s brutal attack that killed over 100 civilians and left about 2,000 homeless, lies 25 miles southwest of Da Nang. Saigon claims stiff enemy losses at Fire Base No 6 near the central highlands while U.S. forces pull back from Laos and Khe Sanh as helicopters depart Quang Tri.
Five House Republicans join a bid to end the Vietnam War by year end. Reps Coughlin Esch Gude Morse Mosher say the U S fulfilled its Vietnam commitment and should withdraw. The letter notes bipartisan support with Nixon amid Calley’s My Lai verdict and draft debate. Continued on Page Seven.
Alabama Governor George Wallace visited Lt. William Calley at Calley’s bachelor quarters in Fort Benning as Calley remained under tight house arrest under new Army rules. Wallace urged Nixon and Congress to grant clemency, expressing belief in a desired right action for Calley amid the Vietnam War era.

An Omaha patrolman gathered 500 signatures in a day, about 2,000 rallied inDallas, and draft boards in six states resigned as Calley remains under light guard at Fort Benning after his life sentence was reviewed by Nixon.
Henderson, the 50 year old commander of the 1st Brigade in the Amer ican Division, faces pretrial on My Lai coverup charges. His civilian lawyer Henry B. Rothblatt argued public sentiment mirrors Calley case feelings and said Henderson saw only 68 killed or wounded with reports of 20 noncombatants killed and 128 Viet Cong present.
Unemployment sits at 6 percent for March, while the economy may head toward recovery. BLS commissioner Geoffrey Moore testified before the Joint Congressional Economic Committee about the mixed signals and a leveling jobless rate, with declines in some components.
