Washington reports a French official estimate places German casualties in the great western front battle between 275000 and 360000. Despatches say wounded are sent to Belgium to hide sacrifices, with nearly 100 divisions identified and some over half their strength lost on day one.
American troops in Paris cheer the official announcement that U S forces will fight alongside French and British units in northern France. Soldiers traveling toward the plains of Picardy received orders from the French high command three days earlier, and the news sparked wide elation as crowds urged the troops forward.
Alexander Millar longtime secretary of the Union Pacific railroad, died at his Plainfield home today in his 68th year after retirement last year.

Washington April 1 The Navy department may construct a long range gun capable of carrying 105 miles. It would use a subcaliber plan with a large gun and a tube for a smaller caliber. Secretary of the Navy Daniels is understood to favor the plan while other authorities question its military value and humanity.
The steamship Celtic, a 20,904 ton White Star liner built in 1901, was attacked and torpedoed by a German submarine on a voyage from England to America. Efforts to save the vessel continue. no passengers are believed aboard. Reports note few or no American soldiers were on board, and past incidents involving the Celtic are referenced. Also, the British steamer Tithonus was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on March 28, with one merchant officer and three naval ratings lost.
Lincoln Nebraska April 1 reports say Rudolph Schopke a wealthy banker from Emerson was seized by a crowd and tarred and feathered at the town edge last Saturday for allegedly telling Red Cross workers he owed nothing to the United States. He is described as an enemy alien.
Nelson Myers 20 and Arthur Burke 18 were arrested at 11 30 PM by Detective Frank M Holbrook on theft charges. They allegedly burglarized five junk yards since December weighing stolen items and burying them in a sand pit before taking them to a waterfront boat. A 259 dollar haul of zinc tin and copper was stopped at 116 Knowlton street and the suspects were taken to police headquarters after a pursuit that began when they sought a horse and wagon for a recent theft.

In Wichita Falls Texas April two U S aviators were killed when their planes crashed from about 1500 feet at Call Field. Second Lieutenant Byron Jackson Jr of the American aviation service died instantly. A cadet accompanying him was only slightly injured. Jackson's home is listed as San Francisco.
