Bridgeport barbers 288 strong push to shorten daily work by one hour and Saturday by two. Union leaders date a tentative schedule from 8 am to 8 pm weekdays and 10 pm Saturdays, replacing the current 7 am to 6 pm and 11 pm Saturday close. Officers confer with city barbers to gain buy in for an Oct. 6 effective date.
In Lincoln Nebraska Bigamist B Waugh was sentenced by Judge William Bennett to two to five years in state prison. The case notes that Waugh married Miss Nellie Lenier in 1912 and fathered three children. State’s Attorney Alcorn stated Waugh had prior imprisonment for embezzlement. Mize Stevens, present in court, expressed tears as she testified to the marriage and abandonment.
The National Baseball Commission set that the first game of the World Series between New York and Philadelphia will be played in New York on October 7 assuming New York wins the pennant. Umpires named were H Conneally John J Egan William Klein and J E Rigler. Tickets. newspaper arrangements and officials named.
John Gunn, administrator of George Gunn’s estate in Danbury, sues Jes H. Smith and William B. Bedict of Hat Town for 16900 dollars after a boiler being unloaded rolled onto George Gunn, killing him. The administrator claims insufficient crew to handle the boiler and seeks compensation. The case is returnable to a term of the superior court.
Surgeons at the emergency ward protest a rising use of charity department care for intoxicated patients, with a well dressed woman claiming epilepsy from alcoholism. The woman used the fictitious name Umstater and an unlisted Golden Hill Street address. Officials say the ward serves urgent cases or those unable to pay, and blame behavior on affluent individuals seeking free treatment. A strict check of applicant names and addresses is planned.
James Flinter, 92, a Bridgeport resident and steamboat man born in 1824 in Ireland, appeared as a witness in a minor city court case. He shared tales of old Bridgeport, claimed longevity stems from constant activity and limited sleep, and recalled a life spanning the California Gold Rush era, Civil War service, and decades as a landscape gardener.
Washington reports Col. Dan C. Kingman, senior colonel in the Army Engineer Corps, is expected to succeed Brig. Gen. William T. Rosell as chief of engineers when Rosell retires due to age, likely early next year. Kingman’s rise would place him at the head of the Army’s engineering branch amid ongoing projects and modernization efforts.

Ellen Dahlin wed Oscar Swenson in a Stratford home ceremony at six o clock officiated by Rev Olson of Washington DC. Attendants included Mrs Dahlin, Mrs Desmond, bridesmaids Hilda Borg and Amelia Broombeck, flower girls Gladys Dahlin and Ruth Swenson, best man George Dahlin, ushers Hilding Wennerholm and Arthur Dahlin. About 100 guests attended with gifts for the bride and groom. The couple plan a Niagara Falls trip and will reside in Stratford upon return.
The eighth annual convention of the American Association of Commercial Executives opened in St Paul. M. B. Trezevant, secretary and manager of the New Orleans Association of Commerce and president of the association, spoke today along with E. H. Naylor of Springfield, Massachusetts.
Residents along Connecticut avenue and Stratford avenue protest crushed stone from the area being dumped as fill. A citizen notes the material is nearly new crushed stone worth about three dollars per two horse load and argues it should be reused to improve muddy side streets. He estimates two two horse loads from Stratford avenue are worth three dollars, urging cheaper, shorter hauls to surface streets.
Purley A. Baker head of the Anti-Saloon League plans a 4000 member delegation from every state to petition President Wilson for a proposed amendment banning all traffic in alcohol. The group will meet at Columbus in November 1913 for the league convention and proceed to Washington by special trains to seek an appointment.
Berlin dated report states police in Frankfurt am Main received a photograph from New York of "Father" Schmidt, the accused killer of Anna Aumuller. A Tageblatt comparison with a Mainz priest photo shows marked differences in mouth and eye areas, raising doubt they are the same person. If they are the same individual, authorities believe he may have altered his features since leaving Germany.
A car bearing Connecticut number 1863 crashed into a fence and slid into the Naugatuck River after tearing down six fence posts and damaging a telegraph pole on the road between Naugatuck and Waterbury. The auto, towed to Torrington, awaited its owner’s word. State records list S H Patterson of Torrington as owner. occupants were Patterson, his son Gilbert who drove, and Edward Hine of Torrington. none were injured.
Chicago September 25 Illinois Bankers Association opened its annual convention with a strong executive council recommendation supporting the currency commission's Glass Owen Dill bill. President J D Phillips of Green Valley noted he would address the bill in his annual address but would not forecast his stance beyond saying it was analytical and denunciatory.
Albany Sept 25 The court of impeachment unanimously allowed testimony on campaign contributions to Governor Sulzer not listed in the articles of impeachment. Prosecution manager Stanchfield argued the gifts numbered a hundred or more and showed a scheme to reveal some and conceal others. Schiff and Elkus gave funds. testimony covered deposits and signatures, with debate over admissibility and intent.
