Washington oct 11 Hepre ve Jeremiah Donovan denounced public servants who violate their oath of office and praised Underwood Kitchin and other faithful officials. He contrasted absentee leaders with those who attend and perform, citing the tariff and currency debates and noting frequent absences by prominent figures, urging resignations or in duty.
New Haven reports that President Wilson will transmit the nominee E. S. Thomas of New Haven to the Senate on Monday for federal court judge. Upon confirmation, Thomas will resign as executive secretary to Gov. Baldwin. The city also notes the marriage of Attorney Robert H. Gould and Miss Cora Barbeau last summer.
Speakers announced for a Democratic gathering in State street Lund's West End theatre tomorrow night at 8 15. John M. Donnelly Stephen F. Boucher and Alderman Daniel Walker will speak.
The liner Volturno was destroyed by fire at sea in a fierce gale. Ten rescuing steamers stood by as hundreds of passengers and crew faced a night of terror amid towering waves and flames. Estimates of dead range from 136 to 236, with wireless reports later correcting the total to 136. Survivors totalled 521, and many passengers were steerage travelers bound for New York or Canada. The vessel sailed from Rotterdam October 2 for New York and was built in 1906 at Glasgow.
Steamers eastbound carrying survivors include Carmania La Touraine Minneapolis Czar Narragansett Devonian Grosser Kurfürst Seydlitz freighters. Immigrants aboard the Volturno were Russians Dalmatians Poles and a few Germans. Most headed for Canada.
The Bridgeport Land and Title Co bought 873 875 877 Main Street near State Street from Frederick Banks. The Crescent moving picture theatre operated by Isaac Klopstock occupies part of the site. The building has long been the Klopstock family home and business base. Rumors say the purchase aims to tear down and erect an office building for the company to use, possibly driven by the growth of Bridgeport Trust Co and its consolidation with Federal Trust Co. Verification attempts failed.
