Rumors say City Engineer A H Terry seeks a raise from 4000 to 5000 dollars and plenary powers over staff and expenditures. The mayor and Terry deny hostility, while supporters cite charter changes needed to raise the salary and grant expanded control.
Mrs. Fontaine of this city sued for 2000 dollars after stepping from a trolley and falling beside the track, injuring her ankle. A jury in common pleas court awarded 250 dollars in damages, the verdict coming after a short deliberation.
Rev. Clinton W. Areson, curate of Trinity Episcopal church, is chosen to become rector after Rev. Charles L. Gomph resigns to lead Grace Episcopal church in Newark New Jersey. A parish meeting chaired by Judge Robert E. DeForest will present Areson’s name for ratification. Areson has been key to Trinity’s growth since coming to Bridgeport from New York two and a half years ago.
Deeds filed with Town Clerk Joseph Flint show land purchases totaling $85,000 for a new country club northwest of Fairfield. Oliver G Jennings and others acquire 30 acres from Jelliff and 35 acres from the Lee estate, with additional parcels to be developed. The club aims to be among the region’s finest, overlooking the Sound and rivaling Brooklawn.
Aboard the Cunard liner Pannonia, three heroes are cited for bravery in saving 71 men and 32 women and children from the burning Spanish steamer Balmes near Bermuda. Captain Juan Ruiz kept watch as the crew fought the flames for days, while Innocencio Michaira translated messages from the Balmes and Nicholas Arbonies led passengers into the hot hold to rescue others and cargo. The Balmes passengers, many from Cuba en route to Spain, were sated with clothing and will be sent to their destinations on an early vessel.
Miss Mayme Montague, a guest at the Lavery Craddock wedding, is being entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs George P Farley. She plans to visit several places in Connecticut before returning to her home in Westerly.
The Lake Torpedo Boat Company plans to raise 2 006 000 in gold bearing notes to finance completion of government contracts totaling 1 655 000. The property pledged is valued at 5 582 010. Payments depend on government contract progress with funds released by Uncle Sam. Notes will bear 7 percent interest and subscriptions will be restricted if a target is not met.
Willam Garfinkle, a jeweler at 1163 Mainstreet, reports a well dressed man posing as a traveling salesman visited in the forenoon and carried off seven pairs of diamond cluster earnings valued at 600 dollars in total. The thief remained several minutes, then left with the earrings before police were alerted.
Abraham Greenspun was awarded $100 by a jury in the common pleas court after his wagon was struck by Edward Hill’s automobile at Park avenue and Hanover street. Greenspun sought $300, alleging defendant’s negligence. The Frank Miler Lumber Co. suit against Lawrence T. Gallagher was settled out of court for $600 on a note.
A telegram from Secretary Bryan reportedly reached the American embassy in Mexico City stating that a matter of serious nature is under consideration in Washington regarding Mexico.
Senator Jo Gorman and a Rochester delegation asked President Wilson to address the Chamber of Commerce banquet on December 10 by telephone. The President promised to participate, with telephones arranged for each diner.
Abraham Burl, arrested in Lowell and linked to the theft of Frank T. Preston's jewelry store, pleaded guilty in Danielson city court to the theft and was held for trial in superior court. In default of a $1,000 bond he was sent to Brooklyn jail.
Bridgeport Opera Society plans Verdi Requiem Mass with a 300-voice chorus under Dr. Arthur Moos. The performance marks Verdi’s birth centenary and follows a long preparation with high expectations for an ideal, widely acclaimed presentation.

Nearby, A Gardner of the Connecticut Humane Society discussed a dead horse found near St Augustine's church and possible prosecutions. An attempted burglary on Myrtle Avenue at Bernard Blumberg's home woke him around 1 am as three men fled, with tampering noted at a cellar door and window and one man possibly identified.
Five lawsuits against the City of Bridgeport over Steeplechase Island and Stratford Avenue wharf appear headed for out of court settlement after counsel conferences. Mrs McMahon and heirs claimed city valuation excessive, noting the bridge and unoccupied island buildings affect value. City representatives cited bridge value and other valuations in dispute.
Aged 78 man, Martin Whelan, sues to void deeds of property at 224 Wheeler Avenue claiming he deeded it to daughter Etta J Heery in 1906 to obtain care. He says disputes led to returns and re conveyances. He alleges ill treatment and tampered milk. Heery denies claims. Evidence finished. Judge Bennett to review.
Dr. William T. Elam of St. Joseph Missouri was charged with murder in the first degree after a coroner inquest into the death of W Putnam Cramer of Chicago. Cramer was shot at a downtown hotel by Elam who said he came to get Cramer following weeks of surveillance of Cramer and Elam's wife by a private detective. Hotel detective John Torpey testified he found Cramer dead in a room. Elam expressed remorse at the police station saying there was nothing improper in his wife’s relations with Cramer and noting the moment of the shooting wrecked a man’s life.
British cruiser squadron including Suffolk Lancaster and Berwick received orders to proceed to Vera Cruz. In Mexico City Huerta plans to submit a message to Congress urging dissolution of the assembly and nullification of the presidential election. Congress is expected to back Huerta and appoint provisional leaders while diplomats note Carranza’s stance on interference.
Forty Americans depart Mexico City for Vera Cruz aboard a train arriving in Vera Cruz this morning. Fugitives report few American women and children remain in the capital as the exodus continues with men and others exiting the region.
Frances Escudero minister of foreign relations in the Carranza cabinet asked William Bayard Hale, Wilson's agent, to present his credentials before continuing conferences long under way. The move was seen as a demand for recognition of the constitutionalist revolution before further exchanges with Washington.
Los Angeles reports Prince Stanislaus Sulkensky of Austria indicted for allegedly aiding the entry of Mme Marie Louies Freese into the United States for immoral purposes. The couple, recently married, are said to be on their honeymoon in the Urgent.
Announcement names Robert H. Clark of Worcester as manager of the Park Theatre in this city. Clark brings extensive theatrical experience and will assume duties next week.
