Mew Haven news reports Col Ullman resigned today from his post on the exemption board citing Pelations. The move ends Ullman’s long service in the local public duties and clears the way for a successor to be named.
Paris reports Maj. Gen. Pershing met a delegation from the Alsace Lorraine republican committee. The group praised the American commander’s Austro-Hungarian ancestry and expressed pride that a descendant of Alsace is fighting for their rights and restoration. The delegation noted Pershing’s personal connection to Alsace, his father’s birthplace.
Aerial mail service in Sicily began yesterday with the Ghilo launch piloted by An Nie Nayles at 6 04 a.m. Maples reports the operation to carry mail between regional depots, expanding the island's wartime communication links.
Washington reports a price reduction for soft coal east of the Mississippi, to ease costs for both the public and government. An agreement among coal interests and officials follows days of talks, with further reductions for government use and willingness to continue discussions.
Coroner Phelan reports no criminal liability for the death of Charles L. Page in an auto collision near a Westport cemetery last Saturday. R Castleberg of Norwalk, driver of the other car, was cleared of negligence after testimony showed Page was stationary repairing a tire in foggy conditions and Castleberg did not see the car until impact.
Washington June 29 The president urged changes to the food bill to ease Senate factions and gain public support. He backed halting manufacture of foodstuffs into whiskey and gin but opposed stopping beer and light wines now. He supported a broader power to stop distilling and wine making when needed with an amendment likely later.
Detective Frederick Derrick brought two Italians to the city hall to register them. Neither could speak English and an interpreter said their only reason for not registering was their lack of knowledge of what to do.
In Ottawa on June 29 a dog saved Mrs. Patrick Bruyere of River Desert Quebec after a squall left them adrift on Duck Lake. Bruyere, unable to swim, drowned. the dog swam to fetch help, returning with a note tied to its collar directing rescuers to the stranded woman.
Rabies outbreak in Greenfield Hill prompts 90 day muzzling. Commissioner Phelps ordered all dogs muzzled starting July 3 after three dogs were shot. Dog Warden Larson said he reported conditions to the state, no bites reported locally.
Camp Borden Ontario June 28 Daniel Callaghan a Royal Flying Corps captain who earned distinction in France was killed in an aeroplane crash last night. He and cadet Francis planned a flight to Toronto by air but struck a tree and crashed. Francis suffered a leg fracture. Callaghan was an expert at telegraphing by wireless from aircraft.
British forces press assault around Lens and its Avion suburb amid a thunderstorm. First objectives seized and hundreds of prisoners taken as fighting concentrates amid ruined mines and derricks. Machine guns captured and bombardment continues along a wide front.
Paria June 29 two French merchantmen over 1600 tons and three under that size were sunk by submarines or mines in the week ending June 24. During the period there were 1088 arrivals at foreign ports and 969 sailings.
At the customs house in the Third Naval District headquar ters many motorboat tug and sailing vessel owners sought navigation licenses. Lt. Leonard H. Dyer said applications were in short supply and urged affected parties to mail names and boat details. The policy, effective July 1, requires licenses and references to be submitted. failure to carry a license risks detention.
Morris B Bradford surrendered to police after killing head teacher Miss Alice Black Richards at a cottage on the Lake Winniquam shore. Miss Elizabeth Suess and Miss Dorothy Davis were wounded. Bradford had invited the trio to supper, then attacked them and bound them before fleeing by canoe.
In New York on June 29 the Berkman and Goldman trial moved toward a jury verdict. Emma Goldman will be asked to explain a large $3607 deposit dated January 24, 1916 amid questions about funds linked to preparedness activities and outside money sources.
The Bridgeport Machinists' union reports a high demand for machinists and toolmakers in Bridgeport and other cities as many workers join the army. A standing order exists for 12 men from Port Jefferson shipyards, amid new ventures needing skilled trades. Thunderstorms expected tonight with cooler conditions, then Saturday fair.
An Atlantic port welcomed a Dutch armored cruiser, the first warship flying the Holland flag here in over a decade. The vessel will remain for several days while officials decline to disclose its mission, though it is reported to act as convoy for Dutch passenger and freight ships ready to depart American ports.
