Causes for rising living costs eyed by Senate committee
Washington June 24 Republicans and Democrats clash over the causes of the great rise in living costs from 1900 to 1910. Senator Lodge's majority report cites higher farm costs, demand for farm products, population shifts, immigration to food markets, land fertility, banking for farmers, cold storage, distribution costs, industrial combinations, producer and dealer organizations, money supply, overcapitalization, and higher living standards as key factors. The minority protests and seeks its own views after the panel was not fully funded.
