Naval inquiry opens into fatal Chesapeake hydroaeroplane crash
An Annapolis inquiry investigates Ensign William D. Billingsley’s death and Lt. John H. Towers’s injuries after a gust toppled their hydroaeroplane about four miles off Kent Island. The craft plummeted into Chesapeake Bay, Billingsley fatally ejected and Towers barely survived by gripping the frame. This marks the navy aviation corps’ eighth fatality in tests since 1908.
