Submarines rely on invisibility to attack armed merchant ships from long range, as illustrated by the Moreno incident where 200 shots were fired at 8,000 yards. The danger prompts suggestion that commerce carriers be designed with low visibility, echoing Simon Lake’s views on underwater carrier concepts.
