Harvard Man Denies He Is a Russian Spy
Cambridge Massachusetts June 21 John Gottfried Ohsel, driven from Russia for revolutionary views and accused in a Riga report of spying for Russia, denies being a revolutionist or police spy. He is an American citizen, living quietly with wife Obsel in Cambridge. He has studied at Harvard and hopes to complete a PhD this fall. He says the spy report is false and cites his social democratic past as misinterpreted. Ohsel notes Russia as a foreign country now that he is American, and predicts reform within years under pressure from external creditors. He was among fifty five social democrats indicted for conspiracy before the second Duma’s dissolution. He fled to Finland, then Riga, and returned to the United States in 1907 via England under an assumed name. He is now a correspondent for several socialist papers.
