Foreigners Predominate in the Mines
A Senate immigration committee report finds 62 percent of bituminous coal miners are foreign born from 44 races. Of 54 000 foreign workers, 38 percent have less than five years in the United States and only 20 percent mined before arriving. Many lack mining experience linked to accidents. Seventy percent earn $2 or more daily, but irregular work reduces yearly pay. Company stores persist, often separate but with same stockholders.
