Sugar Center Of Argentina
Tucuman may be called the sugar center of Argentina, says a report from United States Special Agent et al. At present there are 30 refineries in operation there, with a combined capital of nearly $50,000,000. The yield has increased from 127,000 tons in 1909 to 335,000 tons in 1914, but last year fell to 150,000 due to cane growth conditions. A presidential decree prohibits export. Experiments with Java cane show promise. German implements are stocked in Tucuman, though pricier and weaker than American goods, and war limits supply forcing agents to seek US sources or shift to local dealers.
