Railroad employes reject yard stick compensation plan
A New York conference between railroad managers and 350000 workers ended in a flat rejection of the yard stick method and the managers counter proposal. The unions demand an eight hour day with overtime pay and double compensation for the same day. Managers argued overtime would push workers beyond eight hours and offered a compromise removing the double pay while preserving eight hours. Leaders warned the plan would collapse the talks as the wage cut would lower earnings, and the session adjourned for the afternoon to decide whether to resume negotiations.
