Wreck Here Made Much Business In New Haven Depot
In New Haven on June 8 the Fairfield wreck halted four New Haven tracks and drew hundreds of hungry travelers to the Union station. The 11 pm express from New York limped in and, within minutes, 800 people crowded the lunch counter area, grabbing fruit, sandwiches, and coffee. A second New York train at 1 am caused further chaos before services stabilized. Sleepers formed on benches as delays extended, and trains diverted via Derby to Naugatuck Junction. The scene rivaled a circus, with station staff scrambling to restock as crowds surged. Newspapers from New York arrived late, after the wreck delayed mail and express trains.
