Fire at Geological Survey raises questions on future building
A Sunday basement blaze at the Geological Survey damaged topographic maps and folios, but most bulletins and reports were already moved to the Government Printing Office. Estimated losses run to about $75,000, with 80 to 90 percent of folios possibly usable. A new fireproof building, authorized after 26 years of urging, faces delays as funds are allocated. The current structure is overcrowded and a fire risk, despite being iron and brick and formerly deemed fireproof.
