Swiss Desertions Flood Neutral Land Amid War Turmoil
Berne reports between 10 000 and 12 000 deserters from Entente and Central Powers have fled to Switzerland or refused to leave after furloughs. Italians predominate but all foreigners enjoy rights without tax or military duties. Escapes complicate neutrality with aerial violations and shelling near the Swiss northwest neck. Some fugitives are interned after reception on Swiss soil.
