Five Persons Rescued From Sinking Barges Off Penfield Reef
A heavy gale drove the Florence Marie and Edward Fay apart from the tug Galution in Red Ball line service from New York toward Bridgeport and New Haven. The Florence Marie and its crew, including JL Cam and his wife, escaped to another barge before the craft sank. Captain John Daley of New York and his mother Mrs Helen Daley and sister Nora Deley were saved by leaping between barges and were transferred to the Yale Blue. The incident, described as the worst in years on the Sound, left twelve barges in tow and gusts up to fifty miles per hour with 20 to 30 foot seas. The Howard Fay drifted to Penfield Reef. Fairfield Beach life savers found the barge deserted. The tug Vigilant, towing two barges to New London, had to seek shelter in Bridgeport as both barges leaked badly.
