At the Savin Rock reunion, Joseph W. Alsop of Avon and Herbert Knox Smith of Hartford outline a strategy for the Progressive party. Speakers urge longer term work, funding, and unity to overcome the old legislature’s patterns, with emphasis on bridging party lines and building for the future.
Washington July 19 Senator Cummins opened the tariff debate for the Progressive Republicans declaring the Republican party lost public confidence due to duties that were unnecessarily high. He warned the Democratic plan risks disaster by imposing both free trade dangers and oppressively low duties while discriminating against the west in favor of east manufacturers. He compared parties to ships in danger, urged a safety passage under Progressive leadership, and criticized the President for pressuring Congress to influence votes while stressing the need for independence in legislative choices.
Joseph Benedict of 830 North Avenue was fined $100 and sentenced to six months in jail by Judge Coughlin after he grabbed Miss Grace Kelly on Park Avenue and followed her, ignoring warnings. Miss Eve Brenner testified, and Benedict admitted greeting the women in Hungarian before fleeing.
Examinations will be held in Bridgeport and Stamford on August 16 to recruit eligibles for Internal Revenue deputy collectorships. Deputy collectors’ commissions expire with the collector, and the new appointee may not reappoint incumbents. Many examinees are expected to be named as deputies when the new collector is chosen.
New Haven July 19 After a conference here yesterday the concessionaires at Savin Rock have decided not to open their places tomorrow and will keep them closed every Sunday during the season There will be no ice cream or popcorn sold no merry go rounds or scenic railway run An attempt to stop the band concert will also be made The Connecticut Company pays the band for these concerts This action is taken because of the attitude of the management of the baseball team and an insinuation from the prosecuting attorney of West Haven that he will cause the arrest of all who do business on the Sabbath
Washington July 13 Duluth Minn won a substantial portion of its freight rate fight before the Interstate Commerce Commission when a reduction of class rate to that city from eastern points was ordered and present rates were held discriminatory. The commission limited first class east to Duluth to 62 cents a hundred pounds and set rail and lake through rates to Duluth not to exceed those to Chicago. It found joint through rates and lake rates discriminated against Duluth and ordered tariffs by Oct 1 to reflect changes and curb exemptions that harmed Duluth and nearby towns.
Hartford Conn July 19 Governor Baldwin appoints P Fenton of Willimantic as deputy judge of Willimantic police court to succeed James A Shea in the city judiciary.
In Seattle on July 10, sailors and marines marching with the Pacific fleet reserve attacked IWW and Socialist sites after mistaking a Salvation Army meeting room for an IWW rendezvous. Chairs and furniture were smashed, a sign and a Socialist newsstand damaged, and a large meeting hall looted. Police offered no resistance. Security forces later limited further trouble.
New York and Washington July 19 railroads and unions await a mediation decision on whether wage demands and road grievances should be heard together by a new federal board. The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors prepared for a possible strike while awaiting mediator rulings. The board faced an eligibility issue as Assistant Secretary Post of the Labor Department was barred from service under the Newlands act, prompting a possible replacement while urging immediate action from the railroads and trainmen to start work.
Hong Kong July 13 The sev erance of Kwang Tung province with Canton as capital from Pe kin central government was proclaimed by the Kwang Tung governor general. He declares the provincial council appointed him governor general and commander in chief to lead Southern troops against the Provisional President. He vows to protect property. business between Hong Kong and Canton has halted.
City officials prepare for the Eagles parade with decorations at City Hall. Mayor Wilson will review the parade from the stand beside City Hall and attend the celebration at the Poli theater Tuesday night. Decorations were led by F. J. Abercrombie.
Brigadier General Harry H Bandholtz will be relieved September 1 from command of the Philippine Constabulary and will take a command in the regular army with the rank of Major. The successor as head of the Constabulary had not yet been chosen.
Congressman Augustine Lonergan of Hartford, visiting his brother in town, discusses the banking and currency bill with The Farmer reporter. He says House Chairman Glass indicated the measure could be presented by August first and notes House caucus divisions over its non partisan nature and timing. He believes action may occur within three weeks of presentation, with adjournment depending on Senate action, possibly before December if the Senate delays.
Bridgeport figures prominently in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Connecticut state convention to be held at Eagles Hall next Wednesday. John H. Spittler of Bridgeport is a candidate for Grand Trustee with strong chances, and two candidates vie for state president, Spittler and Francis Wade. The gathering will revise state laws, elect officers, and feature a banquet.
The candidate, long serving financial secretary of Bridgeport Aerta, is expected to win re election due to his proven service and dedication. He declined a temporary role when combined offices became permanent, committing full time to the organization. He also seeks the Stockholm Grand Trustee seat at the Baltimore convention to replace John A Bohla, named postmaster of Starnure.
The Bridgeport Democratic district chairmen met at Buckingham Bent to weigh mayoral contenders. They consensus named former City Clerk F. C. Mullins as the strongest candidate this fall. Mullins, years out of politics, is well known for city service and popularity. Committee chaired by Town Clerk M. J. Dwyer and twelve district leaders attended.
Mary Puglia a 16 year old from 273 George Street ran away to New York then New Haven and Romania where Detective Peter Hall found her and returned her to Bridgeport. The mother testified the girl eloped with married man Romania who lived with her for 23 days. Romania’s case was continued to July 22. He is held on embezzlement charges under $3,000 bond.

Dr Andrew McQueeney of the city hospital starts a two weeks auto trip in the White Mountains, Bridgenorth host city left by Dr W H Curley who will oversee his duties during the absence.
