P Thorne, superintendent of the Board of Charities, writes thanks to the Bridgeport Farmer for aiding families in need. The paper and readers provided Christmas dinners and gifts, bringing cheer to homes darkened by poverty during the holiday season.
Unauthorized use of the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage name by the National Council of Women drew a letter from Mrs. Wadsworth to Mrs. Moore of St. Louis. The Anti-Suffrage group cites feministic features in a bill and says the council has deserted the normal American woman and become an instrument for feminists seeking political power and sex antagonism.
New York stocks rose at the market open in response to the president taking control of railroads. Rail names led gains with several rail shares advancing two to eight points, including New York Central up to 71, New Haven around 16, Soo rising to 81, Reading near 7 1/2, Union Pacific to 32, and Southern Railway about 4 to the 4.
The forecast calls for light variable winds and a mild Friday. No precipitation mentioned and temperatures not specified.
Washington December 27 a new plan outlines government operation of railroads with the director general and interstate commerce commission sharing issuances at not less than four percent. Congress may provide two hundred million for rolling stock and dividends above guaranteed net income go to the government. Executive salaries are to be reduced while worker wages rise and unions gain pay improvements.
Clifford W. Shaw, brother of Thomas E. Shaw of Lake Torpedo Boat Co, describes his daring escape to join a bombing squad during a July raid on German trenches. Disguised in British uniform, he fought hand to hand, sustaining two broken ribs and a bayonet wound to the chest before being sent home to recover. Shaw had previously served on the Mexican border with Troop A, then with the American Railway Engineers in France transporting munitions and food to front lines.
In Amsterdam on December 13 the German food cards are now issued on special watermarked paper to deter counterfeiting. The watermark features a capital B in an octagonal frame spanning the entire card, making it harder to reproduce.
Valentino Musante, 31, of Terryville, has been missing since Saturday at 2 am. Luis Purserolla, a New York New Haven Hartford railroad employee, died in Danbury hospital after being injured when a passenger train struck a motor hand car at Osbornetown near Waterbury on December 10. His leg fracture led to blood poisoning. amputation failed to save him. His home was Waterbury.
Rear Admiral F A Bowles outlined a near total failure of the wooden ship program during a Senate Commerce Committee probe into Shipbuilding. He noted the American International Corp at Camden N J would profit about 6 million dollars on 120 steel vessels and that the government supplied capital and paid all bills. Bowles said the company provided the know how and organization. He added that if the government later builds and operates ships postwar, the fabricating yards investment may prove profitable for the state.
War Savings Committee led by William T. Hincks announces a house to house canvass to promote thrift stamps in Bridgeport. City divided into districts with canvassers visiting two families each and sending ordered stamps via printed postcards to Postmaster C F Greene at no cost to the sorter.
Mayor Clifford B. Wilson did not sign the ordinance raising city officials’ salaries including a 100 percent boost for the mayor. He left word for Alderman Robert N. Blakeslee to sign, but Blakeslee did not sign, awaiting the mayor’s return. The amendment must be signed by today, tomorrow, or Monday to take effect January 1.
Count Czernin reports Central Powers favor immediate general peace with no annexations or indemnities and demand that Russia and its allies accept terms and carry them out. They oppose forcible seizure of territories and vow to protect minority rights, with each belligerent bearing its own war costs.
Washington observers say Count Czernin’s peace basis may only delay negotiations to strengthen German lines. The United States maintains it will not sign with any government lacking the free will of the governed, and rejects a return of Alsace Lor raine unless tied to broader conditions. Belgium’s freedom and German demands linked to policing features also figure in the diplomacy.
