Leonard Matherbe of Park Avenue Stratford was struck by a car at 6:45 AM while crossing near Barnum Avenue. He intended to drop Christmas cards into a mailbox and was killed outright. his body was removed to an undertaker. Family were notified via envelopes in his pockets.
County Commissioner Ballard, ally of John T. King, claims King ordered Baby Doll’s vice den closed two months ago. John T. King denies knowledge of Baby Doll and the Water Street resort, saying he never knew its location or operation.
William Baby Doll Thomas will dine tomorrow at the county jail with Sheriff Simeon Pease amid a murder warrant finding by Cer J. J. Phelan reported Saturday. Judge Gardiner Greene has adjourned the December term to Thursday morning, delaying any State’s Attorney action until then. Coroner Phelan’s testimony is extensive and transcription by George S. Hawley will require time for review.
Ephraim Williams of New York and H Clyde Barber of Westerly were killed when Williams car skidded on an icy roadway two miles east of Hopkinton around 6 30 this morning. Frank Monti escaped injury as he rode in the back seat. Williams, 42, a Princeton graduate and New York attorney, was a native of Stonington. Barber was the son of Winthrop W Barber of Westerly.
The Russian freighter Shilka, a Kerensky era vessel, arrived from Vladivostok with a mutinous crew declaring loyalty to the Bolshevik government. The wireless operator was nearly shot during the attempt to signal, and crew members attended I W W meetings here. Immigration officials expected to take charge of the ship today as the Bolshevik allegiance complicates its status.
Connecticut experiences light rain and rising temperatures tonight amid a mix of clouds and sun by Tuesday. Winds shift from south to northwest, bringing cooler afternoon temperatures and a breezy finish to the day.
Mrs. Rose Bohl of Danbury sues her husband Joseph Bohl and the Union Savings Bank in Common Pleas court alleging she deposited 1284.87 for him to hold as trustee and that he drew out 800 when he deserted her in 1916. She seeks a decree transferring the remaining 709.94 to her or placing the deposit in her name.
William Bobetes, a Greek resident of 14 Bank Street, was shot by a friend after a late outing with William Armenes. Bobetes was treated at Dr. E H J Hennessey and taken to Bridgeport Hospital in serious condition. He says Armenes attacked him, fired three times with a .22 revolver, and robbed him of $2 before fleeing. Police have not located Armenes.
Washington announces full enforcement of censorship of foreign mails under the trading with the enemy law. A joint committee including the port office, War and Navy departments, the War Board and the Commerce Board manages the work with minimal interference to legitimate letters. Initiated November 1, the program ends secrecy upon government request, coordinating with British and French censorships and merging with existing wireless and cable censorship.
Halifax Nova Scotia reports 1158 total bodies recovered from the disaster with 854 identified and 304 unidentified. Fifty one bodies were buried today as the city adheres to its annual publication custom, skipping tomorrow’s edition.
