Records released by Bridgeport show March mortality at an unprecedented level with 130 deaths. Pneumonia caused 40 deaths amid extreme weather, while other major causes included measles scarlet fever diphtheria and bronchitis. infant deaths reached 39 and seven still births were recorded.
Charles Ber strom of University of Southern California preparatory school cleared 12 feet 1 inch to set a new interscholastic pole vault record at a Pacific Coast track meet in Berksley California. The previous mark of 12 feet 1 inch was set by Roy Mercer at Merecerebure Academy in 1909 and tied by Eugene Schobinger of Harvard School in Chicago in 1911.
Judge Clark in Hartford police court rules a druggist may sell liquor on election day without violating the liquor law. The decision follows the arrest of Joseph Goldenberg after a drink was bought at his drugstore on April 1 city election day. The ruling clarifies that prohibitions target keeping open places for on premises drinking, not sale by a druggist on election day.
Bartford April 5 Charles McQuaid appeared in police court charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. He posed as a collector for Shortville N Co industrial institute and has netted about 44 dollars. His case was adjourned to Tuesday on bonds under 500. He admitted prior arrest in Waterbury. In Hartford prison, Charlie Dewey, the escaped convict, remains missing though officers pursue vague clues across the state.
North Baltimore Ohio April 5 two men were killed four scalded two severely and five others injured when eastbound passenger train No 6 on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ran through an open switch. The engine tore loose from the balance and crashed at Hoytville four miles west. The dead are Fireman Jackson of Garrett Indiana and Grant Mason of Hoytville. The scalded are Engineer Bert Koft of Garrett and Claude Hage C C Miller and N M Miller of Hoytville. Five passengers were hurt but not fatally and were taken to Garrett hospital.
Mrs L Brackett Bishop announced at a Women's Party luncheon that she would wear mourning until English suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst is released from prison where she has been sentenced to three years. Bishop entertained Pankhurst on her last Chicago visit.
In Detroit on April 5 an “honest burglar” reportedly visited BH B Castle's apartments. Mrs Castle found her jewel case short by two dollars after leaving home Wednesday morning. a note pinned to the bill read Thanks lady, I was hungry so I tok 2 J. D. The report to police describes the quirky theft and the polite message left by the thief.
Hartford April 5 The governor opposes a Connecticut state building at the 1916 Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco and the appropriations committee will not seek funds for a large exhibit. Instead the state would use any money to aid Connecticut manufacturers with product displays to promote practical returns.
Washington April 5 The Democratic majority of the Ways and Means Committee voted unanimously to accept President Wilsons final sugar schedule decision and adjourn to Monday They will choose between free sugar or eliminating duty in three years The president is expected to declare his decision today
The Rev George M Brown of the First M E church will open with prayer the April term of the supreme court of errors in this city. Chief Justice Prentice makes his first appearance here since becoming head of the court, with Justice Beach of New Haven also appearing for the first time following governor Baldwin's appointment.
County commissioners schedule a hearing on April 12 over United Electric Co of Waterbury petition to erect poles on Felden Hit road in Witten. An earlier hearing was withdrawn due to a flaw, and opposition from local property owners remains about pole placement on the highway.

Two suffragettes were caught while attempting to set light to Kelso race course grandstand in Scotland. Petroleum soaked rags were found beneath the stand. two women were captured as fires were started. Ayr grandstand also burned, totaling about 15000 dollars, blamed on militant suffragettes amid heightened patrols at Chatsworth and Blenheim. Placards and suffrage literature were found nearby, implicating the same group.
In Trenton on April 5 a license was issued for the marriage of Miss Ida Phillips official stenographer to three New Jersey governors and retained by Gov Fielder and Richard H Taylor a government secret service man at attached to the White House Miss Phillips is said to be known to more public men than any other woman in New Jersey.
Mr Emil Class of New York City will render selections at the Olivet Congregational church vesper service tomorrow afternoon. A chorus of young people will lead the service and Rev Morgan Millar will answer questions from the congregation. The service begins at 5 oclock and lasts one hour. Everybody is welcome.
Sofia April 5 The Bulgarian government delivered its reply to the Powers note on March 22 regarding a peace basis between Turkey and the Balkan allies. The Balkan reply accepts mediation but with reservations that challenge key terms, including frontier lines and Albanian frontiers, while seeking recognition of war indemnity and Aegean island cession.
Jurors for four New Haven railroad officials slated for trial next week in the criminal superior court have been summoned to report Wednesday instead of Tuesday. The opening day will be taken up with motions argued by defense led by Homer S. Cummings and others. States Attorney Stiles Judson returns Monday to take up the cases, which are expected to stretch over several weeks.
New Haven April 5 Col Eaton lector of internal revenue for this district says tax collections under the corporation tax law this year will surpass any record in this district and will exceed one million dollars.

Vesper Institute conducts a 5 PM service at South Church with a sermon on self denial for the weak and Sabbath observance. Music includes Miss Marguerite Bishop soprano solo with organ and choir pieces by Otis and Sartorio, ending with benediction and a final hymn.
Paris reports the anarchist Lacombe, awaiting trial for the Ducret assassination, killed himself by leaping from the De La Sante prison roof after a dramatic escape. He had confessed to multiple killings and was found armed before his escape sparked a citywide search.
A 16 year old boy named Zito Cestaro slipped between freight cars as a Waterbury crowd rode from Naugatuck Junction toward Bridgeport. He was dragged beneath the wheels, but the train stopped in time. All toes of his right foot were amputated. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital. He resides at 478 North Main Street Waterbury.
Gus Rivers of Canaan and Henry Freeman of Norfolk were held for the superior court by Justice Ford on charges of stealing chickens. Taken to Litchfield county jail for six months, the jailer refused admission claiming the offense was a superior court matter not a justice's court. They appeared before the justice court for sentence reversal and committal to the higher court.
In Meriden on April 5 probate court ruled John HL Burke, 16, mentally incompetent and sent him to Middletown Insane Hospital. Burke, stepson of Charles E. Paige, had recently been arrested in Kingston, New York after posing as the son of a rich man and running up bills. Paige described the youth as acting queerly when he left Meriden two months prior.

Washington April 5 Society women numbering 350 welcomed the wives of President Wilson Vice President Marshall and cabinet members at a formal breakfast. The menu excluded wine due to a temperance campaign led by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. About 250 attendees were invited. many others unhappy at being left out. The event featured an illustrated lecture on White House furniture by Mrs. Annie Gunn Baker. no speeches were given. Mrs Champ Clerk did not attend due to prior engagement.

Branford Connecticut April Joseph Gainty former personal tax collector and insurance agent, who fled town about a year ago, was arrested in Lowell Massachusetts by Deputy Sheriff Carney and is to be brought back. The specific charge was not released. he left his wife and four children behind, one a five week old infant.

In Paterson New Jersey on April 5 hundreds of silk mill workers and supporters gathered outside and inside the courthouse as William D Haywood organizer of the Industrial Workers of the World faced a habeas corpus hearing and possible reversal of a six month jail term for disorderly conduct. Police secured the scene while striking crowds eyed a moving picture recording of the proceedings aimed at selling rights for a film.

New Haven April 6 a stationary engineer quickly acted to save workers on a scaffold when a derrick swayed and began to fall in a scientific school laboratory. He thrust the boom aside as the crane toppled. The accident caused minor injuries to two men and one horse was nearby.
