A New York capitalists group with several million dollars plans a southern expansion to Mississippi. They intend a state office to vet lots, issue bonds, build houses, and take mortgages, using a Jacksonian as manager. They see Mississippi as a strong development state with bright future.
The Magnolia Gazette argues taxes rise with crime levels as Lafayette and Pike counties face higher rates due to costly criminal trials. It cites the Mathis Owens and Lester murder cases and notes road and court costs, urging citizens to back law enforcement and jury action to ease taxpayer burden while Mississippi’s vast undeveloped resources await responsible farming and industrial development.
The Vicksburg American argues Mississippi’s wealth remains rooted in farming as vast acres still uncultivated could feed and enrich the state. Factories and railways may grow, but farms are described as perennial fountains of sustenance and riches.
