The Utica Normal and Industrial Institute opens September 30 as its nineteenth annual session. Located five miles south of Utica on a 1600 acre plantation, founder Wm H Holtzclaw, a Tuskegee graduate, leads a school praised by Booker T Washington. Thirty one teachers and about five hundred students study trades, reading, writing, and practical skills, supported by a cooperative white board and strong community backing.

Cotton Coming In Amid Short Crop In Brandon
Farmers bring several bales daily to Brandon as the cotton crop remains very short from boll weevil damage. Prices run 20 to 21 cents per pound. The county pecan crop has been nearly destroyed by web worms, and persimmons are partly ruined. Worms are in many trees and should be destroyed promptly to limit further damage.

Duncan Robbins, of Pelahatchie area, lost his barn and two mules last Sunday night. The fire, discovered too late to save the outbuilding or free the animals, left Robbins hospitalized for several weeks prior to the incident.

Star Consolidated School Opens Amid Incomplete Building
The Star School opened on Monday September 11 with exercises at the Baptist Church. Prof J I Dobbs gave the opening address and praised the female teachers.
