A Brandon Mississippi Republican report from April 1863 recounts a survey of Jackson during Union occupation. It lists burned factories, a church and parsonage, depots, warehouses, bridges, private homes, and a damaged post office. Large losses are estimated at about five million dollars with many enslaved people taken.

Rev Sam Jones Dies in Sleeping Car After Revival Tour
The renowned evangelist Rev Sam P Jones of Cartersville Ga died early Monday from heart failure aboard Rock Island train No 4 near Perry Ark. He had just left Oklahoma City after a revival and wished to attend his family reunion on his fifty ninth birthday. His daughters Annie Pyron and Julia Jones were with him. The body was sent to Cartersville for interment. ministers visited Mrs Jones and his daughter. A local Masonic escort accompanied the remains to the station.
