Supreme Court affirms decree of chancellor in antitrust suit

The Supreme Court split three to three on the Revenue v. Robertson fire insurance case, affirming the lower court’s ruling against sixty one companies except five nonmembers. Judges Cook Holden Ethridge found guilt, Anderson Smith Sykes dissented, and the decree stands as to four five companies with the five others dismissed. A likely appeal to the U S Supreme Court is anticipated.

Hard surfaced road planned from Curai’s Crossing to Richland Creek

The County Board of Supervisors approved construction of a hard surfaced road from Curai’s Crossing or Heart’s Store to Richland Creek. The graveling will aid residents in winter when the road is rough. Work will begin at an early date.

Rankin County Girls Organize Club at MSWCW

Rankin County girls at the Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus organize the S R S Club. Officers are Nona Martin president Iva Lovell vice president and Bessie Billingstea secretary treasurer. Members include Ruby Barksdale Eva Mae Levett Mina Cross Lyda Alice Martin. The Rankin quota at the college is 10 and organizers hope for more entrants next year.

Dry kiln blaze at Brandon Depot devastates lumber

Last Saturday morning Howie's Mill at Brandon Depot caught fire amid village alarm. Firemen found the dry kiln engulfed and beyond saving, with thousands of feet of lumber burning. They battled to save surrounding buildings. In the afternoon a cotton gin caught fire but was quickly extinguished.

Former chancery clerk of Rankin dies in Jackson

Former Rankin County chancery clerk Mr Bridges died at his Jackson home after a brief illness. Born in Simpson County seventy three years ago he served during reconstruction and later as chief steward at the insane hospital. He leaves a wife and five children and was a longtime Sunday School teacher and senior deacon at Second Baptist Church. Funeral was conducted by Dr King.

Presbyterian Church to Hold Sunday Services with Dr Hobson

Dr J Hopson will preach at the Presbyterian Church next Sunday at 11 in the morning and at 8 in the evening. In the afternoon he will travel to Bethel in the southern county to preach to local people. The column closes with a homily on pace and prudence.

Rev. Philip Davidson of Greenville Mississippi attracted good crowds to the Episcopal Church with lectures and sermons. His morning lectures explained church matters many visitors did not know while his sermons pleased attendees despite poor weather. Davidson praised as an able preacher and intelligent man by locals.

Dr W H Watson and Dr I C White moved last week as town begins to liven up. Watsons occupy W D Thomas home with Mrs Thomas still there plus Watsons. Dr Watson staying with S A L Melaurin Jr until phone installed. White family moved into Watson home. Repairs and painting done. several new homes built in town last year.

Thanksgiving Appeal From Gen Wroten For Hospital

W M Wroten commander of the Mississippi Division of the U S V appeals through Major Patrick Henry of County Post 265 U C for a Thanksgiving offering of one dollar from every veteran, descendants of veterans, and all sympathizers to build a hospital at Beauveir Old Soldiers Home. The Beauveir hospital is a major need of the state and many are urged to contribute.
