Accidental Tragedy At Smith County Cotton Gin

At Good Water in Smith County last Saturday a teenage worker vanished after loading lint cotton into a press. The bale was pressed and opened to reveal the boy crushed flat, his precise fate unclear. Neighbors debate whether he fell in or collapsed, a startling and unexplained accident.

Rankin County Teachers Association Meets in BranDon

The Rankin County Teachers Association met in Johnson hall on Saturday November 7 with President J J Dawsey and acting secretary J I Covington. Rev R D Norsworthy opened with scripture and prayer and welcomed members. About twenty teachers attended. discussions covered morning exercises teaching history physiology geography and student decorum with plans to meet again first Saturday in December.

Board Approves Salaries and Bonds for County Posts

The Board of Supervisors on Thursday morning allowed Dr J T B Berry 37.50 for third quarter county physician pay and continued several road petitions for form. Bonds for county and district officers for the 1904 term were fixed, including Sheriff 15000, Asst Sheriff 10000, Treasurer 13000, County Treasurer 12000, Circuit Clerk 3000, Chancery Clerk 5000, Assessor 3000, Coroner and Ranger 2000, Supervisors 1200 each, Justices 500, Constables 500, Superintendent of Education 2000. Accounts for election duties and other services were approved. Stock law petitions and land attachments were ordered, back tax assessments continued, and chairs and tables for Brandon courthouse were authorized. The board adjourned to December.
