The American Farm Bureau Federation argues agriculture must stay the nation’s basic industry despite postwar reconstruction. It urges rewarding farmers, popularizing rural life, and advertising farming to boost profits and stability while strengthening country life and local education.
The passing of four Confederate veterans in Rankin Camp 265 over the last two months is recorded. R D McRae died November 4 after serving in the 28th Mississippi Cavalry under Capt. J M Smith then Capt. William Ratlitt. J R Robinson died December 16, having served in Co G 35th Mississippi and paroled July 1865. G R Robinson died last Friday after enlisting in Co C 8th Mississippi Infantry and parole June 1866. Uncle Jerry Chapman died Saturday after serving in the 4th Mississippi Cavalry and parole May 16, 1865. All four fought for the country and were members of Rankin Camp 265 UT.
At a Friday meeting on January 12 the P T A formed a Civic League, merged with the Po T A, and outlined park and playground beautification. Landscape gardener from A M College will assist. Mayor Henry pledged support. Mrs Lonus outlined cooperative hospital plans and office setup for children treatment. Committees named for park equipment, hospital rooms, and office fitting. Mr Fred Lotterhos to speak on community betterment. men invited.
As the year begins and taxes are paid, Rankin County residents buy new license tags at the sheriff's office. The previous green tags are replaced by black backgrounds with purple figures, described as more attractive. Thousands of tags have been issued and are selling quickly.
The Woman's Missionary Union of the Baptist Church held an unusual Tuesday meeting at Uyisions church with full attendance. Members prepared surgical dressings, each division assigned a number to make, which were then sent to foreign hospitals where they are greatly appreciated.
A large gathering of Black farmers from across Mississippi and neighboring states attended a two day conference at Utica Normal and Industrial Institute. Attendees shared experiences from failure to success in farming and community development with speeches by white leaders including Prof. F M Coleman. Prof Holtzclaw was re elected president for another year after serving eighteen years.
The Brandon News reports U T Bailey & Co successor to Myers Bailey & Co of Pelahatchie ran a full page ad last week. Bailey recently purchased the full stock of the old firm and is thriving. A letter from A T Bailey praises a Brandon ad for drawing customers and promises another advertisement this week.
General Passenger Agent Woods and Traveling Passenger Agent Dickson of the Alabama and Vicksburg Railway Company visited Brandon and other county points last Saturday. They met at the Bran don News office with Joe F. Runge. Woods praised county passenger traffic and agricultural progress and promised cooperation to improve freight shipments and passenger service.
J. D. Chapman known as Uncle Jerry aged 79 and lifelong Rankin County resident dies suddenly after a heart attack. He enlisted in the 4th Mississippi Cavalry in 1862, served in minor skirmishes, was paroled in 1865, and leaves seven children. He was active in the Methodist Church.
A fire destroyed the Leesburg school building last Tuesday night January 9. No cause is known though it may have started from the flue. The old building once served as church and school, now the site awaits rebuilding next spring if consolidation is not pursued.
The Brandon News reprints resolutions from The Merchants Bank and Trust Company of Jackson Mississippi. Officers and directors including J. M. Hartfield and O. B. Taylor praise a year of strong performance. The bank carries capital and surplus of 250000 dollars each, signaling strong backing to compete in the South.
W. H. Myers and J. B. Mashburn have bought part of the Pelhachechie lot from R. A. Stinglly and plan a modern Ford agency building. The firm, to be known as Myers Motor Co., will retain Mashburn in continued management as Pelabatehie grows as the town’s taxable pride.
George R. Robinson a longtime Pelahatchie resident died last Friday after several weeks of heart trouble. A Civil War veteran, he served in Co C Mississippi Regiment Infantry and was paroled in 1865. He left three sons and four daughters, with funeral held by Rev. R L Wallace and Dr. P J Lipsey.
The Ladies Missionary Society of the Methodist Church met at 3:30 PM for a lecture by Rev. W J Dawson on Missions and A Woman's Place in the Church. Afterward members visited Mrs S L McLaurin's home for a social with refreshments and warm hospitality.
County Agent Simmons works through Beat 1, organizing clubs and aiming to renroll many boys. The state campaign seeks to enroll more youths than the Farm Bureau Cotton Association, touting the club as the only state backed organization fostering leadership, science-based daily skills, and four-fold development of head heart hand health.
The Rankin County Teachers Association notes Pelahatchie’s progress as a leading town with new buildings, bridges, a growing trade, and plans for modern water and electric services. The group praises H P Barksdale for four years of county education leadership and fixes dates for Beat and County Field meets.
Val HL Sessions will organize a two group community choir at Major Pat Henrys home Friday night. Sessions arrives Friday afternoon to attend meetings. All town residents may join. Songs for Presbyterian Church services next Sunday will be practiced at this and future weekly sessions. The prior choir disbanded but organizers hope for a lasting, enjoyable community group.
The notice states that in January every motor vehicle owner must pay the registration fee. If not paid, a penalty of one hundred percent damages applies and the tax collector may seize and sell property. Citizens with automobiles and motorcycles in the county are urged to pay promptly.
A notice from Mr. Robert Gundy of Mississippi College urges all former students living in Rankin County to attend a meeting at the Court House in Brandon on Saturday January 20 at 2 p m to form a Rankin County Mississippi College Club. Also noted is a Farm Bureau meeting in Rankin County on Saturday January 27 at the Court House, led by F W Moore. Farmers are asked to ship two cars of hogs from Pelahatchie on Saturday January 20 via their county agent I Simmons Co Agent.
