Battle of Sabine Pass remembered for heroism at Fort Dowling

In spring 1864 Gen Banks failed to overrun the Texas coast as Dowling and 40 defenders held Sabine Pass. Narrow water and a sugar mill wing dam saved Banks’s fleet, sinking three gunboats while one surrendered after paroling 1,000 men. Dowling’s stand preserved New Orleans and the Confederacy’s coast.
