Col W A Montgomery withdraws from the congressional contest in Vicksburg. He states he believed he and Col Hooker could settle who would represent Hinds county, but found it impossible and that continuing the race would be useless. He consulted no one and acted to let friends choose between remaining candidates.
Circuit court convened Monday morning after adjournment and sworn in petit jurors for the week. Archie Smith named as special bailiff. State docket heard and disposed of cases including retailing guilty with fines, burglary and murder with suspended sentences, arson bond set, and numerous gaming and assault cases. Will Reno acquitted. Wm Hemphill pleaded guilty but pending sentence. Wm Hatcher case in progress.
Editor letters argue for a four month term at 25 dollars monthly to improve education and wealth. Pettions urged to levy a three mill tax. Author R D Maum from Pisgah notes lack of system and calls for coordinated effort among schools, teachers, and officials to raise living standards and revenue. Pisgah August 11 1902. The school board convened after adjournment at the county superintendent’s office.
The August 4 meeting ordered Trinity school to relocate within the township and deed land for school use. The Robbins school would move to Jordan's Grove church, with district consolidation to Myette Springs and Jordan's Grove and a name change to Jordan's Grove. Obituary notices follow for Mrs. J. H. Bowers of Memphis and Maud Russell of Brandon, describing deaths, service details, and surviving family. A notice by H. S. Cole invites applicants to Nashville College of Nashville, Tenn., with tuition-free opportunity and Sept. 1, 1902 opening.

A Louisville policeman arrested a somnambulist who wandered from home wearing night clothes. The man argued he is not responsible for his condition. The officer responded about improper attire and questioned his church affiliation as he stumbled through the city streets.
