Rankin County Supervisors approve road work and clerical costs

Proceedings show road building contracts and supplies for the county farm and poor house. Items include plows shovels lumber and repairs, salaries for July 1908, tax assessor work, school district petitions, and health officer reports with smallpox notes. Authority granted for road openings and timber sales along with several trustee appointments and exemptions.

McRae per diem and mileage items in county ledger

The ledger records per diem and mileage for several figures including R D McRae and W Denson, with amounts listed for four days and a loan warrant issued to Rankin County Bank for 1540.00 payable December 1, 1908. Adjournment noted for the September meeting under R D McKay presidency.

Rankin County School Board Adopts Terms and District Changes

Rankin County school board met August 3 1908 at the county superintendent office in Brandon. They added territory to Cato school district adjusted township range boundaries and reviewed school status deciding to discontinue Armstead Barrow Mt. Pleasant and other colored schools unless a satisfactory reason is given. They postponed the Agricultural High School and set winter terms for October 1908 and summer terms for April 1909. Insurance matters discussed regarding Standard Live Stock Insurance Co Dallas and Western Fire and Marine Insurance Co Oklahoma both not licensed in Mississippi. United States Lloyd's still under review.

Election managers named and duties assigned in Brandon precincts

At the meeting held Tuesday August 11 the committee endorsed the August 4 list of managers and ordered publication in The Brandon News. W D Ragland named returning officer for Brandon precinct replacing W E Cofer. J W Irby chosen for Dobson in place of Mr Crook who lives across Tumba lo creek. Managers listed by beat, with duties to appoint clerks and peace officers. returning officers receive 4.00 for the two primaries. Also notes Navy admittance denial for Elijah B Morrison of Oloh due to 6 feet 4 inch height. shipboard accommodations are built for average men.

Musical comedy by Sabbath school class at Grove House Academy

Friday night at John ston Hall a Sabbath school class directed by Miss Prima Baker from Lampassas Texas presents a musical comedy with interspersed recitations solos and a cast including Miss Nell Gayden Miss Jean McLaurin Annie Henry Miss Mary White Zou Burney Miss Irene Hobson and others. The program lists duets solos and a dramatic tableau with admission 15 and 25 cents and the piano loaned by Williams & Williams for Jackson.

Wedding at Branch Heights as Barrett Marries Holmes

On August 9 1908 at the Holmes home near Branch Jack Barrett wed Martha Holmes with Rev E S Stewart officiating. The couple are described as devout Christians and well regarded by many friends who wish them a joyous life.
