Sentence Commuted Negro Murderer Appears Sane Again
Vicksburg dispatch reports Hillard Clarke, whose death sentence for Lena Booth murder was commuted to life by Gov. Noel, now shows apparent sanity after a lunacy verdict. He conversed intelligently with reporters, contrasting with prior refusals. A Bayonne incident involved a man jailed in an asylum who wrote an Italian postal card to Jesus Christ describing ham theft and seeking forgiveness. Recorder Lazarus discharged a youth with funds to reach New York.
