Rev Hellen of Clinton preached at Weyen at 11 am, Jim Thobinson accompanied him. Sunday School program planned for the fifth Sunday at 11. All invited. Gladys Beehle and Mr and Mrs John W Whittington visited. John misses chance to see his mother in poor health. Miss Jestine Bates of Sand Til spent time with AB Collum, met by George Berry Eason. Kate Boyd’s birthday noted.
Rankin County reports 22 tuberculosis deaths in 1922 with 3 white and 19 colored victims. Active cases exceed bed capacity. state figures show long term trends including education efforts and costs from illness and funerals totaling about 56.6 million dollars across five years.
Miss Eva Lambert supervisor of the Nutrition Clinics Bureau of Child Welfare under the Mississippi State Board of Health spoke at the courthouse about child welfare. The talk celebrated installing school scales to record children’s weights and urged milk as a priority with vegetables and cereals.
Mr and Mrs UH T Payne move back to Guide delighting neighbors. Miss Blanche Thomas visits Brandon while other Guide locals visit Pelahatchie and nearby towns. A wedding at Pelahatchie, Mayor White officiates as Mary Willie Thomas and Leon Payne wed. Also notes on visits, preaching at New Prospect Church on April 22 and local prize winner Leota Long at a D Lo fair.
High school principals and students engage in the fourth annual good roads essay contest under the Highway Education Board. The 700 word essays explore The Influence of Highway Transport Upon the Religious Life of My Community. Top prize is the H. S. Firestone Four Years University Scholarship valued at not less than $4,000.
G. C. Harris of Route 2 Brandon arrived Friday from the National Sanatorium at Johnson City Tennessee. He is an ex service man who contracted tuberculosis in France and was discharged for health. This is his first visit home in five months and he reports 1 100 ex service men at the sanatorium suffering with tuberculosis. The sitorium is several miles from the city with a car line connecting the two places. He plans to return to the sanatorium after visiting relatives and friends.
Sixteen year old Harry Smith of Jackson jumped from a freight train near Brandon as it neared the depot. He was thrown hard, carried into the depot, treated by Dr. Watson, and escaped serious injury with no broken bones. He had been among local boys who played ball Saturday.
After a successful year under Prof Sherrill and a capable staff Rankin County Agricultural High School will close on April 19. The campus features modern buildings in a grove highlighting thrift. Commencement events include Thursday night Cinderella Ooretta at 8 00 pm Friday Public School Concert 8 00 pm Saturday Senior Play Kentucky Bill Sunday Commencement Sermon Monday Graduating Exercises.

The State Highway Department allotted 235000 to Rankin County with Florence Beat receiving 90000 Brandon Beat 105000 and Pelahatchie Beat 40000. The Jackson to Plain and Jackson to Pelahatchie gravel roads will be completed once funds are available July 1. Surveys are finished and the budget combines with Beat funds to complete the projects.
Major Patrick Henry leads Rankin Camp No. 265 in publishing a roster of twenty eight veterans who served Confederate forces. Names include Patrick Henry, Jas T Barksdale, J R Edwards, A H Hawthorne, W L Manning, D M Robbins, and others with units from Miss. and La. across Brandon Florence Pelahatchie and neighboring towns.
Jackson Scout Troop 8 and Brandon team played a tight opener with a 10 to 7 final score for the local squad. Boys performed well as community members traded Sunday visits and local notices mention several residents and activities in Jackson and Addie.
R A Whitfield died at his son Dr R N Whitfield’s Florence home Wednesday morning at age 14 years after months of illness. a prominent Baptist minister and community leader, he leaves sons Henry Whitfield of Columbus Dr R N Whitfield of Florence C M Whitfield of Jackson O F Whitfield of Washington and R F P Whitfield of Gulfport. Funeral held Florence Thursday with interment in the local cemetery.
Dr. Ruel May, Jackson dentist and former Rankin County resident, piloted the first Rankin County landing in an aircraft from Jackson to visit his mother at Dobson. He reached a pasture landing despite high water, then returned safely noting the 30 mile trip took 20 minutes and joking about Handy and Nell, his old mules.
A Sunday afternoon disturbance at Hattie Forbes home left Walter Jones severely wounded by Coonie Myers who slashed his throat. The incident follows recent Brandon trouble including a gun battle and a separate razor attack by Estelle Williams.
The first spring examination for license to teach in Rankin County was held at the court house Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week. Twenty one promising applicants handed in papers and the exam was described as very rigid. Prof. Lowther and Mrs. Frank Robinson assisted Superintendent Barksdale. Teachers praised the courtesy shown by examiners. A second examination for white teachers is set for April 19, 20 and 21.
Two of Brandon's faithful old colored mammies have died recently. Aunt Caroline Haworth suffered paralysis and died Sunday. she was buried Monday. Aunt Lou Evans, ill for long, died Monday evening and was buried Tuesday at 8 o clock. She was 68 years old.
S H Walker of Star, an employee of the G and I R R, was operated on for appendicitis Saturday at Jackson Sanatorium. He has many friends in Rankin County. The note cites public concern about noise from bad lones.
A proposed ladies rest room in Brandon would cost little yet attract farm trade. The Jacksonville Journal notes women need such comfort spaces, with hostesses and nurses, hot lunches, and child care. Rankin County farmers are busy delivering co operative fertilizer as rains ease. County Agent Simmons urges 25 entrants for the R. H. Green prizes and emphasizes education over profit. Delivery plans cover several towns as nitrate and acid phosphate roll in for a big cotton season.
