Edward Watts was arrested in St Charles for alleged rape of a seven year old. A masked mob surrounded the jail with ropes. Marshal Parr and the prisoner escaped through a rear window and fled into the woods toward Lewiston nine miles away, then took a train to Winona and were later jailed there.
A new syndicate forms to seize control of hotels in Yellowstone Park. Members include John D. Terry and Charles Gibson of St. Louis, Casey of Minneapolis, Carrington of Toledo, C. B. Wright and John C. Bullitt of Philadelphia, and Frederick Billings of New York. Gibson reputedly owns a NY World stake. Casey and Harrington deal in Ohio transport and coal, likely with Standard Oil. The group plans to take Park property and is unlikely to fail.
A Cedar Rapids citizen was robbed of 33 dollars by two bold offenders who were later arrested along with two others. On the way to jail they assaulted an officer who fired, fatally wounding one man known as Doug who fled with stolen bills. A ball struck Arthur Mann, a cigarmaker, in the back. he may die. Mann recently moved from Independence.
