Shaking Hands Fashion Split Across English and American Society
The Brooklyn Eagle derides the new shaking hands custom as absurd though it wins social adoption. Women lead with a rigid extended arm and a poised bow while men grasp the hand like a ladder rung, then release and end the ritual. The practice, first seen in Punch, has spread to New York society at McAllister hall. Additionally, notices outline Knights of Pythias travel plans for the Minnesota Grand Lodge Biennial Conclave in Milwaukee, July 8–12, 1890, with special trains and a detailed programme from July 7 to 12.
