The Grand Rapids Magnet reports Mas McKinley was nominated by Republicans as their candidate for Ohio governor. McKinley delivered a rousing speech to great enthusiasm, with his victory considered a foregone conclusion as he consistently leads his ticket.
Merrill of Aitkin condemns McKinley era actions and declares independence. He says he will not vote Republican again and may abstain from Democratic or farmers alliance tickets. His defeat as county attorney 3 to 1 last election is cited as party backlash and not McKinley related.
The difficulty between regimental officers and the adjutant general is settled. Resignations of Col. Wright and Adjutant McGill are rescinded and companies remain in their regiments. Camp is ordered at Lake City Minnesota from June 27 to July 6. Co K members welcome the outcome.
The Port Royal buoy adrift since November 26 1886 zigzagged from Charleston toward the Gulf Stream then near Bermuda before drifting north and south along the Atlantic. Seen again June 9 1888 northwest of Bermuda it lingered for years, finally heading south and east of Bermuda last noted September 15.
