Memorial Day Sermon and Brainerd Observance Reflections
Memorial Day remembered as a national sacrifice with glowing recollections of the Civil War, abolition of slavery, and national unity. The Brainerd ceremony included a parade from city hall to Gregory Park, a prayer, speeches by Rev Rowell and Col. L A Grant, and tributes at Evergreen Cemetery. Grant’s address framed the war as a divine cleansing, condemned slavery, urged education and Christianity, and urged national pride and unity alongside a future of peaceful progress.
