A stranger offered Indian pottery to Mr. John S. Covington who dismissed the deal as rubbish. He insisted the right Covington is his father S. F. Covington, a student of ethnology, while the son favors present inventions. The man corrected the misidentification.

A married man George Johnson killed his nineteen year old sister in law Grace Rand as she slept in her bed and then died by his own hand. Johnson, his wife, and children lived on a rented farm with Grace Rand nearby. He kissed his wife, then attacked Miss Rand, who bled from a throat wound. Grace Rand was to wed soon, possibly triggering jealousy.

Samuel Aliff and John Huffman were arrested in Ringgold County Iowa for the 1867 murder of an elderly man named Stiner. Sheriff Beard located them in Kansas, secured inter-state requisitions, and returned them to jail. Aliff, over fifty, and Huffman, thirty five, claim not to have fired the shot. authorities expect conviction after two decades.
Brainerd Minnesota sheriff arrested George Wescott alias West, linked to a Dakota girl Jessie Mann run away with from a Lake City Minnesota school. Wescott has a wife and three children near Milbank Dakota. Mann’s father resides there. They were detained at Aitkins after papers showed marriage. Wescott to face bigamy charges.
The chief of the national bureau of statistics reports 387 821 immigrants arrived in the United States in the fiscal year ended June 30 1885, down 122 013 from the prior year and 401 171 from the 1882 peak. In June 1885 the Baltimore Boston Detroit Huron Minnesota New Orleans New York Passamaquoddy Philadelphia and San Francisco districts saw 55 778 passengers including 45 382 immigrants 6 952 U S citizens returning from abroad and 3 444 aliens not intending to remain.
