Dewey Watch Fund Gift from Northwest Children
The Dewey watch fund grows from a 1 cent gift idea by Archie Cadzow of Rosemount Minnesota. About 50 000 children contributed pennies through 175 Northwestern newspapers to present Admiral George Dewey with a 22 carat gold watch using bronze torpedo metal and Reina Christina gold for the fob. The watch features the name GEORGE DEWEY on the dial and four white stars on the back cap, with a blue enamel inscription and a final presentation to Dewey on May 1 1900 in Washington chaired by Congressman McCleary.
