The narrator watches Old Pat grow fond of Miss Howard who once seemed untrustworthy. To prove control the horseman swaps saddles, and Miss Howard mounts Old Pat. She races off, her yellow hair and red cap flying, leaving the narrator astonished by the horse’s bond with her.
In a tense pursuit, a rider uses Old Pat to chase a fleet Englishwoman who seeks escape. The man binds her wrists with a silk handkerchief after she tries mischief, while the horse shows distrust and the narrator ironizes on danger and honor.
A rebel soldier and a bound prisoner share a camp in a bleak forest as a twilight wind sweeps the hills. They eat, talk of loyalty and rebellion, and guard against danger while Old Pat the horse watches in the cold night, the fire casting shifting shadows on their tense, uneasy truce.
In Chapter IV the narrator notes horses eyeing supper, especially Old Put who expresses hunger. Unable to feed them, he promises morning provisioning possibly by robbing a patriot farmer. The scene includes a restrained horse and a reprimanded hack while a girl and narrator sip from a canteen and share another drink to ward off the cold.
