The largest upright silo in McCulloch County was filled to capacity late Tuesday afternoon with silage for the cows on the Hurd farm near East Sweden.
Leslie O. Marshall, 85, longtime Lohn resident and Brady National Bank director, died Wednesday after a long illness. Funeral held Thursday with minister Frank Cawyer officiating. Burial in Lohn Family Cemetery. Survived by son Floyd, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Wayne Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Bill W Johnson and grandson of Mr and Mrs Ernest Johnson was graduated from Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island as an Ensign in the U S Navy After a 10 week Anti-Submarine Warfare School training in Newport he will go to Key West Florida to serve as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard the radar picket ship Thomas J Gary
United Way plans a 7 30 p m dinner Monday Oct 2 at Brady Schools Cafeteria with Sam McCollum III as kick-off speaker. Tickets available at the Chamber of Commerce office. Publicity chairman Mrs Ed Keeling urged community support and an educational evening.
The McCulloch 4 H achievement event kicks off National 4 H Club Week Monday Oct 2 at 7 30 p m in Brady High School auditorium. Year pins medals and certificates will be presented to outstanding members and leaders. Gold Star Boy and Gold Star Girl for 1972 announced.
J. C. Penney manager Al Peterek said two teenage girls were caught shoplifting in the Brady store Tuesday and were turned over to authorities. He noted the policy to prosecute shoplifters and that several Brady merchants have faced shoplifting in recent months.
The Herald publishes corrections listing 22 omitted names added to the petit jury roster. New names include Patsy P. Mays Hicks Campbell Mrs G M Yates Fred Betsill Frank D Flanagin and others across several households and professions.
The Brady Jubilee Association met Monday night and set the racing schedule for the coming year. Futurity Races are planned for April 15 and 22 with Jubilee qualifying on June 23-24 and Jubilee races July 2-4. September races are planned for September 2-3. The group agreed to spend 100 dollars on trees for the track area with other civic organizations.
The McCulloch County Commissioners Court met in a called session and approved a budget of $390,694.53 for the coming year. Total resources for 1973 were set at $473,827 with net ad valorem taxes of $169,864 and other receipts of $206,970 for a grand total of $376,834. County and district bonds and time warrants totaled $106,000.
M. E. Ed Tittle retires Sept 30 after three decades with the Texas Highway Department. Beginning as a red man in 1942 on Highway 190 near Lampasas, he rose to engineer technician level, witnessed office moves, and earned a clock radio retirement gift at a Brady Lake fish fry. He and wife Genevieve have five children.
Elgin Gerald Dennis 35 of Odessa and formerly Mercury was found shot in a motel room in Odessa Monday. Justice of the Peace ruled death by self-inflicted gunshot wounds after an inquest. Funeral services were held in Odessa and graveside services in Cox Cemetery near Mercury. Dennis served in the U S Marine Corps Reserve and was married with two sons. Survivors include his wife, two sons, parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Congress member Omar Burleson announced a $120 414 grant from the Economic Development Administration to Texas for a one year program. The funds fund screw worm tick fever and scabies eradication projects amid a federal cattle quarantine across several Texas counties.
