The Melvin PTA hosts a Halloween Carnival Saturday night at the Melvin school. A Mexican supper runs 5 30 to 7 p m with adults 75 cents and children 25 cents. Coronation of the carnival queen at 7 20 p m. admission 25 and 35 cents. Activities include cake walk fish pond and fortune teller with snacks and games. An auction features a well dressed doll and a gun.
The PTA Carnival at South Ward School will offer 37 prizes, one more than previously announced. R A McShan and Son Grocery is added to the door prize list. The event is sponsored by North Ward and South Ward PTAs and starts at 5 30 p m.
Brady fans are invited to a barbecue supper in Llano on Friday before the Brady Llano game. Proceeds fund the Llano 4 H livestock judging team’s trip to the national contest in Chicago on November 23. Supper runs 5 to 7 pm at the Llano school cafeteria. tickets cost 1 for students and 1.50 for adults.
About 60 junior high age children will canvass the town Sunday afternoon to raise funds for CROP the Christian Rural Overseas Program. They will meet at the First Methodist Church at 3 30 p m and begin at 4 p m using identification from the Ministerial Alliance. Contributions may be deposited at Commercial National Bank under CROP.
Piggly Wiggly begins an Instant Bucks Game offering thousands of silver dollars as prizes over eight weeks in Prady. Store and market managers Joe Elliott and Harold Weaver describe the promotion tied to the store’s new ownership and look. Instant Bucks are free with no purchase, worth up to 1000 dollars, and every participant wins a token. winning combinations appear on the back and redeemable for silver dollars. The event also features double S and H stamps on Wednesdays, a new meat market with Swift’s Premium beef, and guaranteed fresh produce with fixed low prices.
Brady Lion gridders shut out Mason Punchers 20-0 in the eighth grade game and 24-0 in the seventh grade. Dorman Moore threw 40 yard pass to James Mask for a touchdown while Moore and Williams scored. Seventh graders remain undefeated. San Saba visits next Tuesday for two games.
The Brady Junior High Lion Band, a 63 member group, will make its first public appearance of the year Tuesday night at Bulldog Stadium before the seventh and eighth grade games against San Saba. Director James Mallow lauds the band as a fine ensemble with Susan Evridge as drum major and several named twirlers. Some football players will not march.
Tickets for the Fall Festival and barbecue at St Patrick’s Church go on sale now. The event starts at 6 p m on Saturday November 10 at the National Guard Armory. Adult tickets are 1 and children 5 cents, obtainable from any church member via the Clean and Press Shop contact. Proceeds fund the church building fund.
County commissioners move to file for a federal grant to fund half the courthouse cost with the county to cover the remainder via a bond issue. A public vote would decide the bond, while Fort Worth filing with the Community Facilities Administration is planned. The four story reinforced concrete building would span about 28,150 square feet at 16 per square foot, totaling about 527000 with furniture and equipment.
McCulloch County Farm Bureau members reelected all six directors for three year terms Warren Jones Howard Bloomer Lindsey Passmore Paul Hanson Billy L Jones and David Dahlberg. Officers to be chosen November 3. Meeting at Brady High School auditorium featured Choral Club with 80 voices directed by Mrs Don Hale and a program including the Double Quintet Melvin dance team Paula Modin Sohn and Rochelle singers.
A new 50 by 90 foot office building will be built at 09 West Commerce Street corner High Street for TV Enterprises. Lee Threadgill of Brady, in the Air Force, bought the lot from Gus Shropshire of Fort Worth. TV Enterprises will occupy the west side with a drive in window. four other offices will face High Street. Mack’s Barbecue Stand has moved across the street. the old building was demolished. Completion expected in three to four months.
Raymond Cates, 75, longtime Whitewright resident and father of Ray Cates manager of J C Penney in Brady, died in a Sherman hospital Tuesday. He worked 55 years in Whitewright Water Department before retiring. Funeral at First Baptist Church Whitewright at 2 p m Thursday with burial in City Cemetery.
Joe B. Gault remains a patient under observation at Medical and Surgical Hospital since last Tuesday. The status is observational with ongoing monitoring and routine checks by the staff.
In M S Hospital Mrs Frank Egueseba is a patient in Medical and Surgical Hospital and is reported to be doing well.
Safeway announces J. C. Britton as Brady store manager succeeding J. R. Rhoton who moves to San Angelo to manage the Pulliam and Zell Streets Safeway location. Britton, a Colorado City native and 1957 graduate, started with Safeway in 1953 and has been assistant manager at the Village Shopping Center in San Angelo for three years. He and his wife Lavern have a two and a half year old son James Lynn.
