About 2,700 people including bandsmen parents and chaperones descend on Brady Stadium Saturday for Region VII UIL Marching and Twirling contest. 33 bands compete seeking Division I ratings and Sweepstakes Award while the Brady Bulldog Band aims for a 13th straight Sweepstakes.
Brady aims to stay perfect at 8-0 as six starters nurse injuries from the Llano game. San Saba, 1-7, 0-3 in district, seeks a rally after a 34-30 state title upset back in 1959. Band events and local marching activities are noted for the Brady High School meet day.
Mayor Billy Jack Neal abruptly resigns at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting citing a minor technicality beyond his control. He thanks the council for support as Ed Davenport becomes acting mayor. A special election is possible if needed, with Neal’s term expiring next April.
Bands perform across multiple classes including CLASS B at 9 00 and CLASS A around 10 48 to 12 04 with several high schools such as Rising Star Eden Santa Anna German and Ranger. Additional appearances include Howard Payne College and many area high schools including Brownwood Stephenville and Granbury with varied times and venues.
United Way volunteers will conduct a house to house canvass in Brady Sunday afternoon starting at 1 30 contact each residence. Cochairs are Mrs Kenneth Hudspeth and Mrs Charles Reynolds. Retired Teachers group meets November 9 at 2 p m in Brady Housing Community Center.
Town buzzes as Brady High School football aims for an undefeated district record. The piece recalls Brady’s early 20th century teams, the 1913 Brady Athletic Association, and games against Mason and Richland Springs before World War I paused the sport.
The Rochelle School invites all district senior citizens to a Thanksgiving lunch at 12 30 p m Thursday November 17 in the school lunchroom. Attendees should call by November 11 at 243 5224 to RSVP. Bus service will be provided within three miles and arrangements made for those farther away.
C Edward Garnett of Hudson Massachusetts announces the sale of Brady Combing Co Inc to Texas International Mohair Inc. Garnett will stay as consultant during the transition. John Lindsay of Englewood New Jersey and president of Texas International Mohair visits Brady to plan expansion as export programs begin. Jerry Dotson remains general manager overseeing operations.
After an executive session Mayor Billy Jack Neal said a raise for city employees is being considered. Arrangements are not yet complete, but a special meeting within a week or less may be called to act on the raise.
County Commissioners weigh combining the sheriffs department and City police in a single agency headed by Sheriff Strickland. Budget questions linger over referendums utility costs and prison housing while talks on a new shared fire truck and cost sharing continue with city council.
