First Baptist Youth Choir Embarks on 10 Day 5 State Tour

Thirty four First Baptist Church youths depart Brady by chartered bus for a 10 day five state choir tour named The Light of the World Singers. Director Mark Crocker leads six adults with concerts in Hooks Elliott Ark Memphis Natchez Baton Rouge New Orleans Port Neches Linden and a home concert planned back in Brady. The group funds included over 1400 for the bus and the choir will stay with church families seven nights with two hotel nights.

Brady Summer Recreation Program Registration Monday

The Brady City Recreation Program opens registration at 9 a m Monday for youths to join track tumbling tennis softball and swimming with swimming at the pool. Activities run Monday through Friday with high school facilities available for older boys on certain nights.

Brady area reports brief thunderstorm and summer program details

A brief thunderstorm dropped .65 inch of rain in Brady early Thursday with wind thunder and lightning. By 9 a m skies cleared and rain chances were 20 to 30 percent later. The Brady Independent School District will run a summer program at school with mental and physical activities and also offer services for the summer. The Brady Municipal Swimming Pool will be directed by Gary Scott with staff and new band classes run June 5 to July 1 mornings Monday through Thursday for interested students with instruments not required the first day. The recreation program welcomes Brady and McCulloch County youths seeking activities for the summer months.

New Texas constitution could cost taxpayers billions says Bullock

Comptroller Bob Bullock warned that a proposed new constitution could cost Texas taxpayers up to 11 billion dollars if implemented fully. The cost study, requested by five state senators, estimates 100 million in state expenditures and 53 million in new taxes annually, plus 771 million to local taxpayers from tax reforms and exemptions. Bullock noted the large potential expenses and that the study does not judge the merits of the proposed provisions.

Screwworm Case Confirmed in McCulloch County

County Agent Jerry DeBord confirms the first screwworm case in McCulloch from the Yocca area. Additional reports come from San Saba and Mason counties. Livestock producers are urged to inspect stock and report suspicions. cartridges are available at the Courthouse County Agent office.

Dr. Otis Moore to Fill Brady Pulpit Sunday

Albert Gray of the Brady Presbyterian pulpit supply committee says Dr. Otis Moore president of Moe Ranch will fill the Brady church pulpit on Sunday June 1. Moore is a graduate of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and has served pastorates in the Houston area. Members and friends are urged to attend.

Catholic Men Plan Picnic at St Patrick’s Church Grounds

The St Patrick’s Catholic Church Men’s Club will hold its annual picnic at 11 a.m. on June 1 at the old Guadalupe Church grounds at East Second and South Elm streets. Dinner of barbecued beef brisket with trimmings is $2 for adults and $1 for children, with proceeds to the church building fund for a future modern hall. Al Peterek, the club president, says there will be food, games, raffles, music and drinks.
