Brady merchants prepare for the greatest Dollar Day with the Standard issuing an early edition to post 24 hours ahead. Shopkeepers urge participation, promising quality bargains as rains bolster crops and Curtis Field expansion fuels local optimism.
McCulloch County 4-H girls host annual county dress revue in South Ward School auditorium Thursday at 8 pm. Younger entrants ages 9 to 18 model outfits. older girls perform later in summer. Top junior advances to district show in Abilene in August. all entrants receive a certificate and small gift. Brady High held commencement exercises with Supt. C A Reynolds delivering a farewell message to graduates. Diplomas were presented by School Board President M E Kidd as Ronnie Salter received the Rotary Club citizenship cup for his West Point appointment. Mae Jensen gave a $50 B P W Club award to Lillie Mae Hermanson for further education. Barbara Bodenhamer performed as vocalist.
The F. M. Buck Richards Memorial Library was dedicated in a Sunday ceremony. Rev. Roy May spoke of cultural and spiritual enrichment, while trustees and Mrs. Richards highlighted the aim to honor Uncle Buck and benefit Brady and McCulloch County.
Pat McShan Jr son of Brady residents will receive a Bachelor of Music Education at Howard Payne College in Brownwood during Friday night exercises. He has already been hired as band director of Menard High School and will start around September first.
Brady city officials express gratitude to hundreds of volunteers and organizations from Brady Brownwood San Angelo Coleman Fort Worth and Austin for flood response. Civil defense director Joe Ogden led operations with more workers than needed as 27000 sandbags were secured from Coleman San Angelo Fort Worth.
County Agent Jimmy Cusenbary says the drouth may be cracked a little but not broken. Bare range land shows 4 to 5 inches of penetration, with hot days reducing it further. He notes past floods in Ozona and Sonora and urges low stocking rates to aid rapid range recovery, while moistures this year aid a good start. Some ranchers plan to restock cautiously and hope for better long term finances if land is well cared for and grain sorghums may allow a second crop.
Floods along Brady Creek swamped ranches from Brady to Melvin. More than 600 to 1,000 sheep perished, with the heaviest loss on Mrs. Johnny White’s northwest Brady ranch. Cattle losses were minor. fences and tanks suffered heavy damage and 100 miles of county roads required repair across Precincts 1 to 5. Most roads are passable now but drivers must be cautious.
Brady records 11.36 inches of rain so far this year far surpassing 1954’s drought year. Total last year reached 8.71 inches while most showers this year arrived fast, with 6.99 inches in May. Mrs. Jay Cochran’s records list month by month totals, though several figures are unreadable.
Harry Campbell of Abilene submitted the low bid of 101 709 for 6.6 miles of grading structures and paving from U S 87 to Farm Road 2028 at Dodge. The project will extend a paved road from 17th Street to Melvin with construction expected in about 30 days, pending other Campbell work.
Cubmaster Dec Taylor announces a Cub Pack meeting in the Fellowship Hall of the First Christian Church Thursday night at 7 30. All Cubs and their parents are urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs C E Brown of Brady are the proud parents of a son born at Brady Hospital today.
Senator Lyndon Johnson cited last week’s Brady flood threat and urged Senate approval of funds to finish the Brady Creek flood control project. He said four dams already completed highlight the need to push this and similar authorized projects forward quickly.
