Woman Legislator Holds Own Against Her Male Opponents
Virginia Duff from Ellis County has won six straight terms in the Texas House, defeating male rivals since her 1950s start. A farmer, lawyer, and Mobil Oil employee, she travels 4000 miles yearly to hear farmers’ concerns and answers about 100 letters weekly. She sits on the appropriations and agriculture committees and leads a study on local water projects. Duff aims to serve in the House and plans no Senate run due to finances. Redistricting may force her district to merge with a neighboring county.
