House approves wage bill with limited coverage expansion

The House passed a bill to raise the minimum wage and extend coverage, though watered down from the administration plan. The new floor remains at 1.15 for current workers and 1.00 for newly covered workers, with coverage reaching about 1.2 million retail and service employees and exemptions for small chain outlets. The administration bill would have raised to 1.25 and added 4.3 million new covered workers, but the compromise could still see Senate action and a conference committee. Visitors include J. W. Hammett at the American Law Institute meeting and Pat Root with family from Erie, Pa.
