Iron Versus Lead Shot Studied In Mallard Tests
A 30 day field trial at Nile Farms Illinois compares lead and iron shot on Mallards. Joint study by Olin Mathieson and the Mississippi Flyway Council reports iron pellets may reduce poisoning but weigh less and lose velocity. Iron pellets could allow more shots per shell, maintaining hit chances despite lower weight.

Iron shot vs lead in duck tests raises concerns
Wide ranging tests measure how iron pellets perform against Mallards. Ducks killed on wing with iron shot show limited crippling, but some birds require multiple hits. Iron pellets often pass through without deformation while lead control shot behaves differently. A full Mississippi Flyway Council report is pending.
