Brady civic leader Henry Hodges dies of heart attack

Henry R. Hodges 76, a Brady insurance man and former McCulloch County tax assessor, died of a heart attack at his home at 301 West Fourth Street. Born May 23, 1879 in Goliad, he served as Chamber of Commerce president in 1932 and was active in Rotary, the First Methodist Church, and local events. Surviving are his wife Elizabeth Graham Hodges and three sisters. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church with burial in Junction.

Heart O’ Tex as Tennis Finals Set for Saturday

The fifth annual Heart O’ Texas Tennis Tournament at Brady High and Junior High courts runs Friday morning at 9 o'clock with first-round play starting Thursday noon. Finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Players from 13 West Texas high schools compete as a warm up for spring district meets.

Two Rape Trials Postponed After Acquittal in Brady Case

In 35th District Court two statutory rape trials, Marcial Martinez of Melvin and Tony Camargo of Brady, were postponed after Artenio Sanchez of Brady was acquitted. The defendants were set to trial Wednesday but remained unresolved as the jury returned a not guilty verdict.

Ex Standard Editor Named Clemson Sports Publicity Director

Ray Davis, former The Standard editor in 1952-538 and current Daily News editor in Hays Kansas, has been named Clemson College sports publicity director. He will start April 1 and wrote that he and his wife still enjoy The Standard and praise Bob Wilson's work. The couple has a daughter and asked greetings be sent to old acquaintances.

City Bids Sought for Negro Pool at Willie Washington Park

City Council calls for bids to construct a new Negro swimming pool in Willie Washington Park and pays off a Country Club note of 4 772.60 owed to Brady Building and Loan Association. Bids open April 17 and other actions include Memory Lane improvements and baseball lights move discussion.

Shad Bryson Named To Highway Patrol

Mr and Mrs Shad Bryson and two children move from Brady to Brownwood 1410 Campa Drive where Bryson will begin duties as patrolman for the Department of Public Safety at Brownwood headquarters. He recently completed an 11 week training course at Camp Mabry Austin.

Rockin' Five to Play Dance at Brady Country Club

Dean Baird and the Rockin' Five from Coleman headline a public dance at Brady Country Club on March 31. The group has appeared in Lohn Pear Valley on KRBC-TV and the Big Ob Jamboree in Dallas and is billed as a top West Texas western swing and bop band. Admission is $2 per couple.

Parade Committee Seeks Old Auto For Float

A Brady and McCulloch County parade committee seeks an old car to rebuild into a parade float. They want a runnable chassis and motor and plan to tow it to the scene but have it self propelled during the parade. Contact Johnny Miller with any leads.

Brown Centennial Boosters Parade and Pageant Planned

A 10 car caravan from Brownwood will visit Brady around noon Saturday to promote the Brown County Centennial. The Brownwood celebration runs Sunday through April 14 with the historical pageant Memories featuring 450 performers at 8:15 p.m. in Brownwood High School stadium. The show includes Indians pioneers Gay Nineties couples soldiers dancers and a grand finale.

Junior High Night At Country Club Dance

Junior High Night invites the junior crowd to a Saturday informal dance from 7 30 to 10 50 p m at the country club. Admission is 50 cents per person and popcorn is free.

Hatchery to Open Egg Depot at Old Brady POW Camp

Western Hatcheries of Dallas plans a year round egg depot at the old Brady POW Camp, with three coolers and an office. The site will collect 1,800 to 2,000 cases of eggs weekly at peak, operated by three men plus a refrigerated truck driver making pickups across Eden to De Leon. Hill Hicks says a local manager will run Brady operations, with a likely transfer from Jefferson City, Missouri. The program aims to expand high quality hatching eggs in the region, projected to produce 60,000 to 65,000 birds before June 15 this season.

Trial Set Monday For Man Charged In Traffic Death

John W. Ritchie 26 of Waller faces murder with a motor vehicle while intoxicated in the December highway death of Mrs. Fred Appleton of Camp San Saba near Brady Dee. The trial opens Monday in Sun District Court with 41 jurors summoned. Mrs. Appleton’s husband survived as the other occupant of the car. Ritchie free on 7500 dollar bond.

Brady Building and Loan selects Watson for new office

Directors of the Brady Building and Loan Association have let a contract to C A Watson of Brady to build the association’s new office. Harold Deaton says work will start this week and be completed in 90 days at the site of South Blackburn and East Fifth Streets, formerly Lewis Hampton’s Humble Service Station. The white faced brick building will feature wrought iron, terpuzzy floors, panel mahogany walls, and full air conditioning with a 14 by 15 foot vault for records. The current offices are at 215 South Blackburn St.

Barekman Buys Out Auto Store Partner in Brady

Joe Barekman has bought out Clinton Newlin gaining sole ownership of White Auto Store Brady. The new owner announced a store wide sale titled Whites March Parade of Values and plans restocking with auto supplies tires batteries and home goods. Mrs Dodson will remain as a clerk amid upcoming inventory refresh ahead of spring.
